Procept Visits Munich
Electronica is a trade fair held every two years in Munich, Germany. Many of the world’s largest companies are represented at this event, along with a large number of smaller companies. All the companies represented promote a wide range of electronic components, systems, applications and manufacturing technologies, and many take the opportunity to make new product announcements. Procept attended the event as part of its regular industry engagement efforts, in this case with a view particularly to see the latest trends and innovations within the electronics industry.
Adrian Crouch, Procept’s European Director commented “As an electronic design and product development firm, it is critical that we keep on top of the latest innovations in the electronics industry, be that related to electronic components, innovative manufacturing methods or future technologies in their infancy. By getting out of the office and seeing what is happening globally we get a far better understanding of what is possible; knowledge which allows us to deliver significant additional value and innovation to our clients and the projects we work on.”
In terms of the event itself, we made a number of observations of note:
- Significant focus on energy efficient and more environmentally friendly products and technologies. This included a large number of companies demonstrating new LED (light emitting diode) components. A number of companies were also promoting various innovations in solar cell technologies and solar management systems.
- Wireless technologies were well represented, with many existing providers of wireless components taking the opportunity to promote new generations of their products. The most obvious trend is the continual improvements in performance of such components and the continual increase in level of integration, resulting in reduction of cost and development time for these technologies.
- There continues to be a very high level of investment in research and development of miniaturised sensors, many based on MEMS technology (MicroElectroMechanical Systems). Sensors on show at Electronica included accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, gas sensors, pressure sensors and flow sensors; many of which are now able to be fully integrated into even the smallest form factors. This means that it is now feasible to introduce many new capabilities into portable / mobile devices; capabilities that were not feasible to introduce previously in such devices for reasons of cost and / or form factor of the sensor technology.
If you are interested in understanding a little more about some of the technologies or observations mentioned above or would just like to get our view on a technology trend, feel free to contact us. We’d be happy to share our perspective.
