Victorian Government Health Market Validation Program now open

12 January 2012

The Victorian State Government has announced its Market Validation Program (MVP) for the Health sector, with submissions to close on January 31, 2012.

Under the program, public sector health organizations have been asked to choose health care issues which, if solved, would improve healthcare outcomes and delivery, and generate economic benefits for Victoria. Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Victoria will then be asked to propose technology solutions, with successful proposers able to apply for up to $1.5 million to develop a finished product.  Details here.

Under a previous round of the MVP, Procept won the Feasibility Study for a wireless biophony sensor in conjunction with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI). The sensors monitor and identify animal sounds to provide better protection for Victorian farms.  Procept has since won the grant to develop the sensor.

According to Dr Catherine Ainsworth from DPI, ‘The sensors had to be small and sensitive, yet robust and weatherproof, also powered by long-life batteries, wirelessly-networked and fully automatic, so that several sites could be monitored continuously in real time.  It wasn’t a simple task ’.

Under the same program, Procept won the Feasibility Study for a Wireless Body Worn Sensor in conjunction with Austin Hospital and Southern Health. Designed to monitor sufferers of Parkinson’s Disease in hospital or at home, as well as other uses,  the sensor needed to be low cost, accurate and wireless, able to monitor and analyse motion continuously and long term.

According to Prof Mary Galea of Austin Hospital, ‘The proposed solution is unique, fulfilling a need for analysis of patient’s movement outside the laboratory that is not currently being met…Procept has conducted the Feasibility Study using a methodical and highly consultative process, documentation and communications have been of a high standard.’
