World first acoustic trials a success

04 January 2012

Procept in conjunction with the Department of Primary Industries has trialled the Procept developed high fidelity wireless acoustic system which monitors the health and biodiversity of an environment using high definition acoustics.

The system enables a user to deploy acoustic sensors over large geographical areas and monitor the sounds of the environment in acute detail.  The acoustic information is automatically transmitted back to a central server which applies the latest in signal processing to identify bird and insect species and the overall health of the environment.

"The innovation is really the wireless communication that goes between the sensor units and the gateway back to the server” said Prof Stuart Gage of Michigan State University.

“They've developed some innovative and interesting software to enable the programming of sensors from remote locations, to be able to change that program and to be able to change the rate of data being transfer back and forward between the sensors and the server... tremendous innovation"

The system has been trialled in two locations; the first site is at the Department of Primary Industries Tatura facilities monitoring an orchard environment, the other just outside of Bendigo monitoring broadacre farm land.

“We’ve been able to deliver a highly complex fully functional system in less than 12 months which has allowed us to complete the first phase of field trials a full 6 months before the project is scheduled to finish.” said Chris Reade.

The next phase of the project will be to incorporate learning’s from the field trials back into the product development program to refine the system before commercial launch.
