Technology to assess movement disorders

21 July 2011

Procept will work with Austin Health to investigate the development of a movement analysis device for the management of patients with complex movement disorders from neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease and traumatic brain injury.

Movement analysis is a diagnostic technique that provides valuable additional information for clinical decisions about the management of patients with complex movement disorders, such as those with neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's Disease (PD), traumatic brain injury, incomplete spinal cord injury.

According to the World Health Organisation, 15 million people suffer stroke worldwide each year. Of these, 5 million die and another 5 million are permanently disabled.  In Australia alone, it is a leading cause of disability costing an estimated $2.14 billion a year.

Similarly, Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurological condition in Australia and around 100,000 Australians are diagnosed with PD before the age of 50. The total economic cost of Parkinson's disease is $6.8 billion in 2005. The lifetime cost of brain and spinal cord injuries occurring in 2008 alone is $10.5 billion.

“The feasibility report will investigate the viability of a low cost, accurate, wireless motion analysis system capable of providing long term monitoring of human movement in the hospital setting or in the community, “ said Aaron Maher, Managing Director of Procept APAC.

The feasibility report will be completed within 12 weeks and provide the technical and commercial information to enable Austin Health to make an informed decision on whether to invest in the development of a Proof of Concept and clinical trials.

The project is funded under the Brumby Labor Government’s $28 million Smart SMEs Market Validation Program.
